For Lovers Only is like a tongue-in-cheek White Album for a '90s climate torn between retro-kitsch and futurism; the record is filled with '60s-isms that draw alternately on the Beatles and the Kinks, but its real source of inspiration seems to lie farther back, with the vaudeville, big band, and Tin Pan Alley constructions that litter each song. The resulting collection comes across as a much more playful take on certain Lilys sounds (and beats The Three Way to its elaborately sixties-rock punch by two solid years) -- and given the late-nineties popularity of Elephant 6 bands like Of Montreal (whose Gay Parade is a similarly over-the-top collection), its surprising that ...For Lovers Only didn't attract a great deal of notice at the time of its release. ~ Nitsuh Abebe, All Music Guide
